Red Papers Uses Personal Letters to Tell a Powerful Story of Exile and Reinvention

A new literary novel turns private correspondence into a compelling portrait of friendship and survival.

May 11, 2026 — In Red Papers, author Serge Hazanov tells a sweeping story of political change and personal reinvention through a surprisingly intimate format: a collection of private letters.

The novel follows the correspondence of three Russian men—Igor, Misha, and their spiritual guide Yuri—as they attempt to rebuild their lives after leaving the fading Soviet world behind.

Through their letters, readers witness the characters thinking out loud as they confront displacement, cultural confusion, and the challenge of building a future in Western Europe. Their exchanges shift naturally between humor, reflection, and philosophical debate.

“The letters allowed me to capture how people actually process change,” Hazanov explains. “Sometimes they joke about it. Sometimes they question everything they believed.”

As the characters move between Russia and Switzerland, their words reveal a deeper story about memory, identity, and the way individuals reinterpret their past when history forces them into unfamiliar territory.

By presenting the narrative through personal correspondence, Red Papers creates a sense of immediacy and authenticity, allowing readers to experience the characters’ struggles and insights as if they were reading real letters.

Thoughtful and often darkly humorous, the novel offers a fresh perspective on how people adapt when the world around them suddenly shifts.
